Employment Verification

Since 1986, U.S. employers have been responsible for verifying the identity and employment eligibility of every new hire.  In recent years, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and other law enforcement agencies have made worksite enforcement a primary tool in combating illegal immigration.

The I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification form has been an essential part of new employee paperwork for 25 years, but recent developments in enforcement strategies have made it more and more difficult for employers to be in full compliance.  While in the past, employers may have only faced minimal administrative fines, the government today is levying heftier fines and criminal indictments against employers, hiring managers, and business owners.

To help employers comply with employment eligibility verification rules, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has developed on online electronic verification program known as E-Verify®. Participating employers enter key information from the completed I‑9 form, and receive prompt feedback on the employee's eligibility for work, based on DHS and Social Security Administration records.

Attorney D.Ray Mantle advises employers on I‑9 compliance issues and best hiring practices, and also assists in implementing E-Verify® and electronic I‑9 systems. Schedule a consultation today.
