Understanding Immigration Fees and Costs
Applying for immigration benefits generally involves three types of costs.
Immigration Application Filing Fees.
Most applications filed with US Citizenship & Immigration Services or U.S. Embassies require an application filing fee. These fees are set by regulation and are the same whether you file on your own or someone assists you. Except on very rare occassions (such as the H-1B lottery), the government does not refund filing fees if your case is rejected.
Immigration Attorney Fees.
An experienced immigration attorney will evaluate your particular circumstances and recommend the best way for you to obtain legal status. An immigration lawyer will also counsel with you on each step of the application process and help you avoid costly delays and problems. For many applications, the immigration lawyer fees can be paid in monthly installments. Read more about the benefits of hiring an immigration attorney.
Out-of-Pocket Costs.
Whether you file on your own or engage a qualified attorney to assist you, preparing applications to be filed with the government involves copying, mailing, and other clerical expenses. Our office does not bill you for copying and mailing expenses involved in preparing and filing your case. For some applications, additional expenses you will need to pay can include newspaper advertisements, expert opinion letters, medical exams, and translation services.
